Compact, portable caries detection

DeviceDEXIS CariVu is a compact, portable caries detection device that uses patented transillumination technology to support the identification of occlusal, interproximal and recurrent carious lesions and cracks. CariVu continues the long DEXIS tradition of providing intuitive, easy-to-use diagnostic tools for the dental community.

What makes CariVu unique?

  • Uses transillumination technology that makes enamel appear transparent while porous lesions trap and absorb light
  • Allows the clinician to see through the tooth, exposing its structure and the development of any carious lesions
  • CariVu images read like familiar X-ray images
  • Uses non-ionizing radiation which is ideal for children, pregnant women and patients who are X‑ray averse

The intraoral camera is an amazing diagnostic tool

The intraoral camera is an amazing diagnostic tool for viewing different angles in the mouth that we would not have been able to just a few years ago.

The camera gives us the ability to view the entire mouth on a monitor so that we can get a closer look at any potential issues or problems that may arise.

In addition, the patient will have the ability to see for themselves first hand the same images we are seeing. These digital images are also excellent for gaining procedure acceptance from insurance companies.

Digital x-rays are quickly becoming adopted by dental industry

Digital x-rays are quickly becoming adopted by a large percentage of the dental industry. A digital x-ray allows the dentist to take an image of the tooth or teeth and put it into an imaging program. Within this imaging program, there are a number of tools that will allow the dentist to take a very close look at the teeth and surrounding structures with amazing accuracy. As a benefit to the patient, the digital x-ray also provides nearly 80% less radiation than a standard x-ray. This is due to the fact that the digital version of the x-ray is much more sensitive to this radiation and has been specifically designed with the patient in mind.

Ultrasonic scalers vibrate at
a frequency to help with removing stain, plaque and calculus

Ultrasonic scalers vibrate at a frequency to help with removing stain, plaque and calculus. In addition, ultrasonic scalers create tiny air bubbles through a process known as cavitation. These bubbles serve an important function for periodontal cleanings. Since the bacteria living in periodontically involved pockets are anaerobic, meaning unable to survive in the presence of oxygen, these bubbles help to destroy them. The oxygen helps to break down bacterial cell membranes and causes them to lyse, or explode. Hand instruments may be used to complete the fine hand scaling that removes anything the ultrasonic scaler left behind. Alternatively, power scalers may be used following hand scaling in order to dispel deposits that have been removed from the tooth or root structure, but remain within the periodontal pocket.

Two ultrasonic instruments.
Sonic and ultrasonic scalers are powered by a system that causes the tip to vibrate. Ultrasonic scalers are typically powered by an air-driven turbine. Ultrasonic scalers typically use either magnetostrictive or piezoelectric systems to create vibration. Magnetostrictive scalers use a stack of metal plates bonded to the tool tip. The stack is induced to vibrate by an external coil connected to an AC source. Ultrasonic scalers also include a liquid output or lavage, which aids in cooling the tool during use, as well as rinsing all the unwanted materials from the teeth and gum line. The lavage can also be used to deliver antimicrobial agents.

Julie Magnus, DDS is new to me since Danielle Davidson has left, but the transition is smooth, and the care and service is just as wonderful. I highly recommend this practice.
